Friday Mini Reviews #61: J.D. Robb, Elizabeth Hunter & Danielle Bourdon

Betrayal in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #12)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
The maid at the Roarke Palace Hotel has been murdered by Sly Yost, a virtuoso of music and assassination, a hit-man for the elite. Detective Eve Dallas is aware that knowing Sly did it is no help because someone with a personal motive was behind the murder, and her husband Roarke is probably the next target.

This one felt pretty low key, but was still enjoyable to read. It's been awhile since I listened to it, but I remember that the villain was an intricate and interesting fellow while the whole investigation turned out to be really straightforward with hardly any surprises.

On a Clear Winter Night is a short story set after the first three books of the Irin Chronicles.

I am so glad Elizabeth wrote this happy ending for her heroes. It was fluffy and Christmas-y and gave real feel good feeling to me as a reader. It's a short story which feels like an icing on the cake, and for winter season it's perfect.

Desperate for work to avoid eviction from her Seattle apartment, photographer Chey Sinclair accepts a rare opportunity to travel abroad and photograph Latvala Royalty. What can I say? Pure. Guilty. Pleasure! Peeps, it's also free on kindle so grab it. I enjoyed it and I do love a good royal fairytale story, which Miss Bourdon delivers. Of course it's not realistic, but it's fun and hot and full of drama-llama.

Paranormal Fantasy Review: Imitation & Alchemy by Elizabeth Hunter

Imitation & Alchemy by Elizabeth Hunter (Elemental Legacy #2)

Ecopy thanks to the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
All Ben Vecchio wanted was a quiet summer before his last semester of university. Was that too much to ask?

All Tenzin wanted was a cache of priceless medieval coins that had been missing for several hundred years.

And some company.

Phrases like “never again” don’t mean much when you’ve been a vampire for several thousand years. And promises made in the heat of anger don’t outweigh the lure of gold. Ben Vecchio thought he knew everything there was to know about the immortals of Italy. But when Tenzin tempts him into another adventure finding a cache of rare gold coins missing since the nineteenth century, he’ll discover that familiar places can hold the most delicious secrets. And possibly, the key to his future.

Ben and Tenzin are back in an all new novella in the Elemental Legacy series.

I think that seeing Ben grow throughout so  many Elemental Mysteries and Elemental World books and discovering Tenzin's secrets along the way made me as a reader extremely comfortable and extremely attached to these two.

The Postman Knock #149

Hello, ladies and fellas!
How have you been? Hope you are staying safe and warm. I've been seeing peeps in US and Canada suffering from extreme weather and snowstorms. Hope you are all okay.

I've been lazy, lazy, lazy this week and skipped posting two reviews in lieu of reading. And I also enjoyed it very much. *grins*

READ:

Finally finished THE V'DAN. So. Many. Issues. I'll talk about it in my review, but I wasn't happy. CRAVING FLIGHT was adorable and sexy. I understand now why it ended in so many bloggers' best of the year lists.  The best thing about it? It's still free on Amazon. OFF THE CLOCK was mind-blowing as all Roni Loren's reads really. And THE DIRTY SECRET was lovely. I was drooling but not at what you think. *grins*The heroine is an amazing interior decorator, and it was like home improvement p*rn or something.

FOR REVIEW/NETGALLEY:

I am blaming Joy from Joyous Reads. She was raving about this book just when I was eyeing it on Netgalley, and I requested it :)

BOUGHT:

The first book is free on Amazon.

This is it for me. I've been reading and learning Portuguese all week, so hopefully I'll be able to get my reviewing back up too speed next week.

Hugs to you all and I'm leaving you with an earworm.

Urban Fantasy Review: Angel Falls by Tracey Sinclair

Angel Falls by Tracey Sinclair (Cassandra Bick Chronicles #3)

Ecopy thanks to the author

Synopsis from Goodreads
It isn't easy to surprise Cassandra Bick. When you run a human-vampire dating agency, your colleague is a witch who is engaged to a shifter and your business partner is one of London's most powerful (and sexiest) vampires, there's no such thing as a normal day at the office.

But when a mysterious Dark Dates client brings a dire warning of a new threat to the city's supernatural community, Cass and her friends realise they are up against their deadliest foe yet – and that this time, the danger is far closer to home than they could ever have imagined.

Sexy, snarky and with more bite than a crypt full of vampires, Angel Falls is the latest in the Dark Dates: Cassandra Bick series.

You are all probably tired of constant stream of positive reviews on the blog, but truth it, I've been on a very good streak of books from my favorite authors, and it hasn't been broken yet. I also designated some of the not so favorite books which weren't review requests to my Friday Minis, so it hasn't been all of the same quality. While I can't predict what's going to happen in February, I warn you that January happens to be preeetty sweet reading-wise here, on the blog.

The Postman Knock #148

Hello, everyone!
Our road trip was very refreshing even if we couldn't stay away for more than three nights (got back a day earlier because we were missing the farm).

 Ourense, Galicia, Spain
Pics are on our FB page if anyone wants to see the whole lot. Right now we are back to being very busy and enjoying the sunshine despite radical drops in temperature in the evening, but we just seat next to the wood burner in the kitchen, and it's super cozy.
How have you been?

Here is what I've READ:

MARKED IN FLESH was phenomenal. That's all I can say for now. And  both ON A CLEAR WINTER NIGHT and IMITATION & ALCHEMY were absolutely lovely! I am slogging through a few more books right at the moment but can't seem to finish any of them.

FOR REVIEW/NETGALLEY:

You can see which book I managed to read straight away! :) But honestly, all three are much anticipated releases.

I haven't bought anything, so this is it for me, peeps.
Have a great Sunday,
hugs xxx

Friday Mini Reviews #60: J.D. Robb, Leah Rae Miller & Clay & Susan Griffith

Judgement in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #11)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
Set in the New York City of 2059, this futuristic mystery opens in an uptown strip club where a cop has been bludgeoned to death for his most intimate and secret sins. Detective Eve Dallas opens an investigation that plunges her straight into hell.

Audible US/UK | Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository

8/10
Books where Eve goes after dirty cops are perhaps some of my favorite, and this one involves an old enemy of Roarke, which means our guy plays an even more proactive role here. I also enjoy when a misogynistic villain completely underestimates Dallas's badassery and gets his behind handed to him. Aah, bliss!
* * *

The Summer I became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever.
Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository

8/10
Another cute and lovely book about a nerd in disguise. Maddie is a cheerleader with a secret obsession with comic books, but for some reason she decides that if anyone ever finds out about her inner geek she will become unpopular and her happy, carefree life will end. *scoffs* It's an easy, fun, positive and comforting read, and I'll be on the lookout for this author in the future.
* * *

The Kingmakers by Clay Griffith & Susan Griffith (Vampire Empire #3)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads

The epic Vampire Empire trilogy rushes to a heart-wrenching conclusion of honor and love, hatred and vengeance, sacrifice and loss.

A war to the death.

Empress Adele has launched a grand crusade against the vampire clans of the north. Prince Gareth, the vampire lord of Scotland, serves the Equatorian cause, fighting in the bloody trenches of France in his guise as the dashing Greyfriar. But the human armies are pinned down, battered by harsh weather and merciless attacks from vampire packs.

To even the odds, Adele unleashes the power of her geomancy, a fearsome weapon capable of slaughtering vampires in vast numbers. However, the power she expends threatens her own life even as she questions the morality of such a weapon.

As the war turns ever bloodier and Adele is threatened by betrayal, Gareth faces a terrible choice. Their only hope is a desperate strike against the lord of the vampire clans--Gareth's brother, Cesare. It is a gamble that could win the war or signal the final days of the Greyfriar.

8/10
I think this is my rating for the series in general. I really enjoyed the first book, second one was okay, and then I took a long break before reading book three, which was alright too. There are some funny moments, but overall the tone is depressing and reminded me of Sanderson's propensity to kill off any joy his characters desire to have. It was interesting to see how the whole thing can end, but I didn't enjoy it. It felt more like a necessity to finish reading it. I am not sure I'll continue with the spin-offs.
* * *

I am so glad Grace Draven reached out to me to recommend Trueheart for review. I don't think I'd have taken on the new author in the last month otherwise, considering how hectic the blog has been. And I would have missed a discovery of a very good debut in urban fantasy genre.

Urban Fantasy Early Review: The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones

The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones (Charley Davidson #9)

Egalley courtesy of St. Martin's Press

Synopsis from Goodreads
In a small village in New York lives Jane Doe, a girl with no memory of who she is or where she came from. So when she is working at a diner and slowly begins to realize she can see dead people, she's more than a little taken aback. Stranger still are the people entering her life. They seem to know things about her. Things they hide with lies and half-truths. Soon, she senses something far darker. A force that wants to cause her harm, she is sure of it. Her saving grace comes in the form of a new friend she feels she can confide in and the fry cook, a devastatingly handsome man whose smile is breathtaking and touch is scalding. He stays close, and she almost feels safe with him around.

But no one can outrun their past, and the more lies that swirl around her—even from her new and trusted friends—the more disoriented she becomes, until she is confronted by a man who claims to have been sent to kill her. Sent by the darkest force in the universe. A force that absolutely will not stop until she is dead. Thankfully, she has a Rottweiler. But that doesn't help in her quest to find her identity and recover what she's lost. That will take all her courage and a touch of the power she feels flowing like electricity through her veins. She almost feels sorry for him. The devil in blue jeans. The disarming fry cook who lies with every breath he takes. She will get to the bottom of what he knows if it kills her. Or him. Either way.

You guys might have remembered how disappointed I was in the previous book in this series and how it felt like a cop out especially after the gradual build-up of all the previous books. Friday Mini Reviews #59: J.D. Robb, Nalini Singh & Julie Murphy

Witness in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death #10)

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads
With the 'in death' series Nora Roberts has created her own futuristic world - set in 2058 - following the adventures of feisty female detective Eve Dallas and her ongoing relationship with reformed criminal and self-made billionaire Roarke. In 'Witness in Death' there is always an audience for murder.

Audible US/UK | Amazon US/UK | Amazon kindle US/UK | The Book Depository

8.5/10
I really enjoyed this book as it starts as an old-fashioned murder mystery, and Eve has to eliminate the suspects from the people in the room during murder. It was tons of fun, and I can probably recommend this book to a newbie in the series because the story is pretty self-contained.
* * *

Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh (Psy-Changeling #3)

It's not bad. Again I really enjoyed the world-building in general, but couldn't connect to a particular couple. I know I will be reading more in this series, but so far romantic elements in this series are leaving me cold. No pun intended.
* * *

 Dumplin' by Julie Murphy

bought

Synopsis from Goodreads

Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked…until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine—Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

9/10
I loved, loved. loved this book, and it was one of my top reads from 2015. Willowdean or Dumplin is funny and bitter at the same time, and she and her team of friends were a very colourful cast of characters. Add to it living in the south and being a huge fan of Dolly Parton, and that girl was a riot! Hugely recommended. It also tackled some serious issues of girl self-perception of our generation.
* * *

Dystopian Romance Review: The Land of the Beautiful Dead by R. Lee Smith

The Land of The Beautiful Dead by R. Lee Smith

Synopsis from Goodreads
SHE WOULD DARE ANYTHING TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM HIS RULE.

EVEN HIS BED.

He ascended from the darkness years ago—Azrael the Eternal, Azrael the Undying, Azrael Who Is Death—bringing with him the black rains, the fires, the souring of the sky, and the Eaters. Now he rules in the walled city of Haven with his favored Children and his dead court, while all that is left of the living struggles to survive in the ruins of a world that used to be their own. But even as extinction looms, humanity will never surrender to their monstrous conqueror.

For Lan, this brutal life has been the only one she’s ever known, but she still believes it can change. If the war can never truly end until the Eaters are ended, she will go to Haven, to Azrael himself, and demand he end them. To her surprise, she does not immediately die the hero’s death she expected. Instead, Azrael offers her a chance to convince him, and all she has to do is submit herself to the chill embrace of the lord of the Land of the Beautiful Dead.

From the author of The Scholomance and The Last Hour of Gann comes a new vision of erotic horror! This book contains explicit sex and gore and is intended for mature readers only.

Romantic, repulsive, extensive, intensely gripping. R. Lee Smith's books always seem to be a study in contrast, and they definitely mess with reader's head.

The Postman Knock #146

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the new year on Nocturnal Book Reviews!
How have you all been?
I am tired of parties, baking and constant celebrations. It will be nice when everything quiets down.
We are going to head to Spain next week for 2-3 days to take our first holiday in the last couple of years, but I'm sure I'll be checking on the blog from time to time :)

READ/LISTENED TO:

ONCE UPON A MARQUESS was lovely! My review is here. THE WAY OF KINGS was fascinating but depressing. Honestly, Sanderson is a depressive kind of author. You really need to be in the mood for him. MAGIC STARS made my top reads of the year as you might have noticed. Awesome book! TRUEHEART was also a very cool read, and I'll be reviewing it soon.

FOR REVIEW/NETGALLEY/EDELWEISS:

BOUGHT:

The last two were free on Amazon.

This is it for me, peeps! Very exciting reads, and I can't wait to dive in.

Hey, guys! I feel like I should say this just in case :)

All proceeds will go towards my enormous TBR. I will also shelter you on the remote farm in Portugal when zombie apocalypse starts provided you survive getting there. There will be books, yay?
Thank you! Love you all
